Popcorn Pigeon Party

Pat the pigeon knew his ancestors were not always wild.

Pigeon-kind are one of the oldest domesticated species on our planet, and until recently, were kept by humans for almost the whole of recorded history as a vital source of food, sport, and communication. For thousands of years, they were named, housed, and cared for.

Until one day they weren’t.

With the rise of modern technology, messenger pigeons were no longer needed. They were abandoned, which gave rise to the feral, urban birds in cities today.

From the start, Pat had to adapt and figure things out on their own. And they found a way to feel at home in the gaps of human society.

They tried to build their nest in crumbling buildings, fire escapes, and sometimes attics, and eventually landed on a bodega that housed other pigeon roosts.

Unfortunately, Pat never quite learned to nest the way other birds do. The other pigeons helped out where they could. They used whatever they could find: candy wrappers, twigs, and even popcorn. It was messy, a bit sticky, but it was theirs.

They knew that even if most of the world didn’t accept them, at least they had their flock.

This cookie is dedictated for everyone who had to nest somewhere unexpected and called it home.
